bedroom refresh
It is my pleasure to share details of our personal bedroom, including my go-to resources and favorites for warmer weather bedding. As with other spaces in our home, this room came together over time. My hope is to encourage you to take your time collecting what speaks to you - fabrics you love, colors that bring you joy, and special pieces with history and craftsmanship.
Sage greens & shades of yellow fill other areas of our home, so it felt fitting to bring those tones into this room in subtle elements. The Matouk decorative shams have the softest shade of green on the scallop edge embroidery, which coordinates with the Fermob side tables. Though intended for outdoor use, these tables were an approachable price point and an ideal size for the small room. Nightstands can be an investment, so I often consider other options, like coordinating antique or vintage tables.
The antique Sheraton bed hails from the retirement auction of the personal home of a well known antique dealer in Maine (his home is for sale!). I was very much inspired by this bed by the talented Studio McGrath. The special lamps are from a favorite dealer who I admire, Pam with Red Ticking in Seattle. The lamp shades are handmade in a lovely linen, and the old pine columns add a new unexpected warm texture.
Over the years, I have picked up fabrics that I have fallen in love with and made them into decorative pillows. The green toile pillows are in a (now discontinued)Brunschwig & Fils fabric featuring a design based on an original document from Mount Vernon. The front accent pillow is a Fortuny remnant, trimmed with a vintage French silk cord.
A crisp, cool bed dressed in white linens is what I always gravitate towards. Boll & Branch makes soft, organic and beautiful bedding - we sleep on the Signature fitted sheet & pillow cases, as do so many of my friends & clients. Quality linens can last a lifetime, if properly cared for (wash in cold, remove from the dryer slightly damp). Layering in shades of creams & crisp whites create the ideal calm and relaxing retreat that a bedroom should be.
I have two vintage monogramed French cotton flat sheets, from the 1920's, which are in almost perfect condition. I rounded up some similar options, with various monograms, here. One of my favorite Etsy vendors, Wendy with The Textile Trunk, carries some lovely embroidered sheets. True heirlooms!
There is nothing better than a fluffy, cozy duvet folded at the end of the bed. If you have pets, linen is a wonderful fabric that fur does not cling to. I launder our duvet cover bi-weekly with this detergent, dry with these wool dryer balls to help with wrinkles, and give a quick steam if necessary (love this steamer). A wool mattress pad is essential at regulating body temperature in all seasons, and I swear by this one - it's machine washable!
These vintage French herbariums, pressed and preserved, were part of a large portfolio that I discovered and had custom framed. Herbariums were a common hobby and tradition of women in the early 20th century, particularly in Sweden. These collections are often passed down heirlooms, as the creator takes great pride in documenting the specimens of their region. I love the handwritten labels, mixture of grasses, leaves and delicate flowers, and large scale and size of this French set of twelve (available on Molly Solich Studio).
